I've been thinking about this DIY project for a minute. I had a free weekend and decided to give it a shot. I love wedding/bridal shower/birthday party.....any decor, but sometimes it's difficult to find *budget friendly* statement pieces.
All these items can be found locally ( in Kingston, Jamaica) and this project can be personalised to match any theme.
What You'll Need :
Styrofoam Disc ( size of your choosing, but a wider diameter than your cake)
Burlap
Scissors
Glue
Artificial Flowers
Outline the perimeter of styrofoam unto burlap ( I used a fine point marker, but a pencil should be fine ).
Carefully cut around the outline, leaving a few extra millimetres. This will be used to cover the top of your cake stand.
Using the width of your disc, cut a length of burlap just a bit more than the circumference of the disc, so the edges will overlap.
Spread glue evenly on the top surface of the styrofoam, and press down firmly the first cut out.
Spread glue along the sides of the styrofoam, ensuring the top edges are coated.
The overhanging edges from the top should be pressed down firmly, while using the second length of burlap to wrap around the disc.
De-stem flowers from bunch. ( These popped off easily, and had a little stump left at the end which made them easy to place)
Map out positioning of flowers
Bore holes through the burlap into the styrofoam. ( I used a pair of needle nose pliers)
Once you're sure of positioning dip the ends of the flowers into glue and stick them into the holes you made.
For the white berry like florals, I made the holes at an angle to slip the stalks in.
...and that's it !
An easy, fun project if you like crafting. The cloth used to cover the styrofoam can be changed, but I'd definitely suggest something that already has 'holes' ( fibres aren't woven too tightly). The florals can match any colour theme and different objects can be added ( butterfly/ star pins etc). If you have pins handy at home those can be used instead of glue ( and your flowers will be reusable!). Just make sure they're secure.
I hope you have fun with this one!
